If you have refused Microsoft's Windows 10 updates for the past couple of years, it's now time to upgrade. Microsoft announced that it is no longer rolling out security and quality updates to Windows 10 version 1511, which was released nearly two years ago in November 2015.

What's a quality update?

There are two types of Microsoft updates: feature updates and quality updates. Feature updates add new features and functionality and are generally released twice a year. Quality updates provide security and reliability fixes and are released monthly -- typically on what is known as Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of every month. When Microsoft says that Windows 10 version 1511 will no longer receive security and quality updates, it's just being redundant; security fixes come by way of quality updates.

Does it matter if I'm running Windows 10 Home or Pro?

It does not. The end of service for Windows 10 version 1511 affects not only both Windows 10 Home and Pro editions but also Windows 10 Education and Enterprise editions.

How do I check which version of Window 10 I have?

In the search box on the taskbar, type winver and hit Enter. This opens the About Windows window that tells you which version of Windows 10 you are running. If it listed as Version 1511 (or, gasp!, earlier), then it's time to update.

The Chinese Government Has Blocked Whatsapp In The Country

The BBC's China based correspondents said the WhatsApp messaging service started going offline more than a week ago.

A test of its services on Tuesday showed users in China could not send video messages or photographs to people outside China.

The disruption follows restrictions on WhatsApp video chats and photographs in July, which were later lifted.

The tightening of online censorship comes as China steps up security ahead of the Communist Party's national congress which is held every five years.

"The run-up period to a gathering is a normally a time of greater restrictions of all kinds to assure that the critical Party Congress is held under ideal social conditions and is not disrupted", Robert Lawrence Kuhn, long-time advisor to China's leaders and multinational corporations told the BBC.

However, he said it is not yet clear whether the restrictions will be relaxed as has happened after previous party congresses, adding that many analysts do not believe they will be.

Now, Nadim Kobeissi, an applied cryptographer at Symbolic Software, a watchdog focusing on online censorship in China, reports that the use of text messages has also been blocked, completely restricting the use of the app in the country.

Kobeissi believes the move may have been a result of Chinese authorities figuring out how to block the NoiseSocket protocol used for text communication by WhatsApp. Video and other content are shared via HTTPS/TLS, which may indicate that the earlier stay on text messages was not necessarily an act of leniency but, rather, a stay of execution due to technical limitations which have now been circumvented.

With the shuttering of WhatsApp in China, none of Facebook's major services are available in the country as the social media site and Instagram were already banned, marking a significant setback for its ambitions in China, opening the gateway for local competitors like WeChat to take over the space.

Hackers compromised free CCleaner software, Avast's Piriform says

                          

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hackers broke into British company Piriform’s free software for optimizing computer performance last month potentially allowing them to control the devices of more than two million users, the company and independent researchers said on Monday.

The malicious program was slipped into legitimate software called CCleaner, which is downloaded for personal computers and Android phones as often as five million times a week. It cleans up junk programs and advertising cookies to speed up devices.

CCleaner is the main product made by London’s Piriform, which was bought in July by Prague-based Avast, one of the world’s largest computer security vendors. At the time of the acquisition, the company said 130 million people used CCleaner.

A version of CCleaner downloaded in August included remote administration tools that tried to connect to several unregistered web pages, presumably to download additional unauthorized programs, security researchers at Cisco’s (CSCO.O) Talos unit said.


Talos researcher Craig Williams said it was a sophisticated attack because it penetrated an established and trusted supplier in a manner similar to June’s “NotPetya” attack on companies that downloaded infected Ukrainian accounting software.

“There is nothing a user could have noticed,” Williams said, noting that the optimization software had a proper digital certificate, which means that other computers automatically trust the program.

In a blog post, Piriform confirmed that two programs released in August were compromised. It advised users of CCleaner v5.33.6162 and CCleaner Cloud v1.07.3191 to download new versions. A spokeswoman said that 2.27 million users had downloaded the August version of CCleaner while only 5,000 users had installed the compromised version of CCleaner Cloud.

Piriform said that Avast, its new parent company, had uncovered the attacks on Sept. 12. A new, uncompromised version of CCleaner was released the same day and a clean version of CCleaner Cloud was released on Sept. 15, it said.

The nature of the attack code suggests that the hacker won access to a machine used to create CCleaner, Williams said.

CCleaner does not update automatically, so each person who has installed the problematic version will need to delete it and install a fresh version, he said.

Williams said that Talos detected the issue at an early stage, when the hackers appeared to be collecting information from infected machines, rather than forcing them to install new programs.

Piriform said it had worked with U.S. law enforcement to shut down a server located in the United States to which traffic was set to be directed.

It said the server was closed down on Sept. 15 “before any known harm was done”.
